Smart(er) Windows XP instead of Vista

It's too bad Microsoft takes this titanic approach to developing operating systems when in fact they should have just yanked half the features out of XP instead of creating another monster. Wouldn't it be nice if XP was just optimized to run in a streamlined mode loading off a USB drive where it's image could be updated easily with little conflict. Any additional applications, drivers, whatever would be stored on the HD and loaded after. But the really nice thing especially for corporations would be is if if all these additional pieces were stored on a server and smart loaded. Everything would be leverage a registry for easy upgrades and then pushed locally for use, occasionally updating when needed.

I think desktop computing is going the wrong direction with bigger operating systems trying to be cute and dummy proof for people that just don't care. If it doesn't work like a toaster it's too complicated.
